The school is a non-denominational County Primary School, maintained by Hampshire County Council, Council Education Department. It has 100 pupils, both boys and girls, with an age range from 5 years up to 11 years. The school itself has been recently extended to accommodate a classroom for the infants with a protected play area, a new library, computer suite and indoor toilets. |

The oldest part of the building is perhaps
unique by being the only school in Hampshire built of chalk cob. The main
classroom and a two-roomed residential section were built in 1836. In 1873,
Grateley became a board School and the main classroom was doubled in size to
what it is today. A further, smaller extension and a corrugated-iron cloakroom
were also added.
In 1923, kitchens were built and later, as the numbers of pupils grew, temporary
buildings were placed in the grounds. The oldest one of these, an ex-military,
wooden shack was in use until 1993.
In the 90s the school was transformed with the replacement of the wooden
classroom by building a dual purpose classroom/hall, a servery and a staff room
as well as reorganising the reception and office areas. Further development saw
the grounds being re-landscaped and new play equipment and study areas added.
The school has continued to develop with the addition of a new hall and kitchens.
This along with the schools extensive playing fields, netball court and
environmental area means that we have a bright, modern school while
remaining in keeping with our Victorian building.
